Texas’ Big 12 and national championship hopes are gone in the wake of last season’s blowout to Oklahoma, so it will be interesting to see how focused the Horns are this week vs. Baylor. UT is an 11-point Sportsbetonline.com favorite.
The Horns were bombed by the Sooners 63-21, calling into question whether it was time for head coach Mack Brown to retire after UT’s second straight blowout defeat to Oklahoma. The Longhorns were outgained by 388 yards, the worst yard differential for the program since 1950.
The Longhorns (3-2, 1-2 Big 12) couldn’t get a stop and never got their offense going, then lost quarterback David Ash to an apparent left wrist injury when they were trailing 49-8 in the fourth quarter. He was replaced by Case McCoy, who went 5 of 8 for 102 yards and two touchdowns against largely second- and third-team Oklahoma defenders.
Prior to the injury, Ash, like most who play on Texas’ offense, wasn’t doing much of anything against Oklahoma. He was 13-of-29 for 113 yards and two interceptions.
It was easily the worst game of the season for a player who has quickly transitioned from question mark to not even a question on Texas’ offense. Ash had thrown for an average of 300 yards per game in the three games previous to Oklahoma. Ash, who first thought his wrist was broken, says he will play vs. Baylor.
The Bears were beaten 49-21 last week by TCU and have allowed at least 42 points in three straight games. The Horned Frogs took advantage of six turnovers by Baylor (3-2, 0-2). That included four interceptions by Nick Florence, who had TD passes of 74 and 77 yards to Terrance Williams.
Florence was 12 of 19 passing for 289 yards. He was sacked three times, and finished with minus-5 yards rushing on eight carries.
Baylor’s passing attack thrives on throwing deep balls, evidenced by the fact that the 19 touchdown passes thrown in five games have averaged 35.6 yards (including five of 50 yards or longer).
Receiver Tevin Reese has averaged 51.0 yards on four TDs from Nick Florence this season and Terrance Williams has two TDs of longer than 70 yards in 2012. Florence has completed 14 total passes of 40 or more yards this season (8 for TDs) – including six of 50 or more. . Individually, Nick Florence leads the nation in total offense (404.4 ypg) and is second in the Big 12 with 374.8 passing ypg.
Baylor and Texas will meet for the 102nd time on Saturday. Texas leads the all-time series 73-24-4, with UT leading 43-9-2 in games played in Austin. But Baylor did win last year, 48-24.
