It looks as though the list of entrants to Sunday’s 1,000,000 dollar Resorts Haskell Invitational is almost finalized although it will not be official until Thursday. As noted last week the main drama will be provided by the match up of Triple Crown champions Shackleford and Ruler On Ice. However, there are some strong contenders in the rest of the field worth considering.
Astrology
We took a look at Astrology for the Preakness and there was enough there to make this horse an interesting bet. The most impressive thing about the relatively unknown Astrology is his pedigree. His father was the multiple Grade 1 stakes winner A.P. Indy, his grandfather was Triple Crown champion Seattle Slew, and his great grandfather was Triple Crown champion Secretariat. Hard to have better genes than that!
Astrology came in an impressive third in the Preakness Stakes and did not run in the Belmont most likely due to the distance. With the Haskell being a shorter 1 1/8th mile track it may very well suit this horse.
Pants On Fire
Stablemate of the defending Belmont Stakes champion Ruler On Ice, Pants On Fire is coming off a good year. Recent wins have included the Grade 3 Pegasus and the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. Pants On Fire was entered in the Kentucky Derby as well but finished a disappointing 9th. This horse has the quality and training however to be a legitimate contender.
J.J.’s Lucky Train
A multiple winner who recently came in second in the Woody Stephens Grade 2 at Belmont, J.J.’s Lucky Train is a competitive horse who has also done very well in non-graded races. Although this will be a step up for the colt, a win is not out of the question and he might be worth a speculative bet.
