Both the United States and Mexico have thoroughly dominated their respective opponents in Group Stage play heading into their clash on Tuesday night, with the Americans recording the most lopsided rout in Olympic qualifying history.
Led by forward Abby Wambach, who on Friday was named the US Soccer Federation’s female athlete of the year for a record-tying fifth time, the American side has not been tested while blasting an overwhelmed Dominican Republic squad by an historic 14-0 margin last Friday, before pummelling overmatched Guatemala by a 13-0 score on Sunday night.
Amy Rodriguez scored five goals in one half of play in the American win over the Dominican Republic, while Sydney Leroux also scored five times after coming on for just the second half against Guatemala.
Mexico, meanwhile, has also looked strong in their first two outings of this qualifying tournament, blanking Guatemala 5-0 last Friday night before cruising to a 7-0 victory over the Dominican Republic on Sunday. Maribel Dominguez scored three goals in the win over Guatemala, while Anisa Guajardo contributed three second-half strikes in the rout of the Dominican Republic.
Regardless of the outcome on Tuesday night, the United States and Mexico will be the two teams that advance to the CONCACAF region semi-finals on January 27 from Group B. Canada and Costa Rica will move on as the top two teams from Group A, with two of those four remaining teams advancing to play in the Olympics in London, England this summer.
