Two years have passed since the USA women’s soccer team let the World Cup slip away from them in an upset loss to Japan. They’ve been training and preparing for redemption at the Olympics ever since, and look poised for a big year in 2012. Before heading off to London, the United States women will play in a friendly against their rivals to the north, Canada. The game will be played at the Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah this Saturday and will be broadcast nationally.

The game will feature two of the greatest goal scorers in women’s soccer history in America’s Abby Wambach and Canada’s Christine Sinclair. Sinclair is the all-time leader in goals for Canada’s national team with 134 in international play while Wambach is second behind only Mia Hamm for the United States with 138 in international play. Both strikers will likely play a big role in the outcome of this game.

The USA women’s team is 13-1-1 in 15 games this year and currently ranks No. 1 in the world. The gold-medal favorites, led by Wambach and goalkeeper Hope Solo, will also be heavy favorite’s Saturday as they have completely dominated this rivalry over the years. The US women are 43-3-5 all-time against Canada, and haven’t suffered a defeat to the Canadian national team in 25 straight games. In their last meeting back in January, the USA defeated Canada 4-0.

The US also comes into the game in strong current form having outscored their opponents 14-3 over their last four games (four wins) including wins over Brazil, Sweden, and Japan.

All signs point to a win for the Americans here, but Canada certainly won’t go down without a fight. Currently rated No. 7 in the FIFA World Rankings, Canada will be looking to build some positive momentum heading into the Olympics.
