Since then, he has made seven starts, during which he has compiled an 8.90 ERA, yielding 47 hits in 29 1/3 innings. … Smyly is expected to replace Max Scherzer in the rotation for a start after Scherzer left his start Tuesday with shoulder fatigue. Oakland at NY Yankees – A’s RHP A.J. Griffin (6-1, 2.45) vs. Yankees RHP Hiroki Kuroda (14-10, 3.26): Griffin, previously undefeated before Tuesday, endured the worst start of his young career, allowing the Tigers five runs on eight hits, including a career-high three home runs, and a walk with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. … Kuroda struck out the first six batters he faced his last time out, against the Rays, finishing with 10 and earning a win, although he left after allowing three runs in the sixth inning. He is 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA in his career against Oakland.

Baltimore at Boston – Orioles RHP Chris Tillman (8-2, 3.22) vs. Red Sox LHP Felix Doubront (11-9, 5.08): Tillman is expected to get the call as Baltimore’s rotation is a bit in flux with a doubleheader coming Monday. It’s possible Tillman pitches Saturday and top prospect Dylan Bundy goes Sunday. Tillman pitched well Monday, allowing just a runin six innings at Seattle. … The lefty Doubront won for the first time in two months in his last start, giving up one hit, three runs and five walks over six innings. Doubront has held opponents to a .264 batting average. He is 5-5 with a 5.71 ERA in 14 Fenway starts.

Toronto at Tampa Bay – Jays RHP Chad Jenkins (0-1, 4.91) vs. Rays RHP Alex Cobb (9-9, 4.27): Jenkins will make his first Major League start. He has pitched out of Toronto’s bullpen since joining the team in August, and he started 20 games at Double-A New Hampshire going 5-9 with a 4.96 ERA. … Cobb threw five no-hit innings before allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits and three walks over six-plus frames in a loss to the Red Sox on Monday night at Tropicana Field.

Cleveland at Kansas City – Indians LHP David Huff (1-0, 2.61) vs. Royals RHP Jake Odorizzi (first start): Working with an 85-pitch limit, Huff gave up three runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Tuesday. Righties have hit .190 (4-for-21) off the lefty this month. … A top pitching prospect, Odorizzi will make his Major League debut at 22 after going 11-3 with a 2.93 ERA for Triple-A Omaha. Counting the playoffs and his time with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, he was 16-6 with a 3.46 ERA this year.

Chicago White Sox at LA Angels – White Sox RHP Gavin Floyd (10-10, 4.50) vs. Angels RHP Jered Weaver (18-4, 2.79): In his second start since returning from the DL, Floyd was terrific. He threw seven innings, allowing just two runs against the Royals and picking up his 10th win of the season, the third Chicago pitcher to do so this year. … Weaver has shown some noticeable improvement since recently missing a start due to biceps tendinitis. He hurled seven scoreless innings against the A’s on Sept. 13, then seven innings of three-run ball against the Rangers on Tuesday.

Texas at Seattle – Rangers RHP Ryan Dempster (11-7, 3.08) vs. Mariners LHP Jason Vargas (14-10, 3.92): Dempster will be happy to see the Mariners. The veteran right-hander has had six quality starts for Texas and two brief outings, both vs. the Angels. He lasted 3 1/3 innings, yielding five runs on six hits and three walks, in Anaheim on Tuesday. … Vargas has already posted career highs in wins (14) and innings (204 1/3) and ranks ninth in the AL with a 1.18 WHIP. He took a no-decision at Texas his last outing, giving up four runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings on Saturday.
