The sinking New York Knicks will not have star Carmelo Anthony (wrist, ankle) for their games Friday against the Miami Heat or Saturday against the Houston Rockets as Anthony will sit out to rest his various injuries.
Anthony hasn’t been playing well. He followed a 10-of-30 game against Denver with a miserable night in Charlotte. He missed seven shots and got to the line for his single point not by drawing a foul, but by being selected to shoot a technical free throw. The Knicks beat a bad Charlotte team missing its starting point guard. Clearly, though, Anthony still has not found the right mix of when to shoot and when to pass. Overall, Anthony is 40-for-126 in his past six games.
“It’s been a while since he’s hit an outside shot, and that’s just not Carmelo. It just kept getting worse,” coach Mike D’Antoni told reporters.
The Knicks have struggled along with Anthony, losing seven of their last eight games. The 27-year-old has not fallen too far off of the leader boards despite his recent woes, ranking fifth in the league in scoring with 23.6 points per game. The Knicks also announced point guard Baron Davis, who has missed the entire season with a back injury, will not be activated for this weekend’s games.
The Knicks rank 15th in the league with 94.5 points per game. They have been held to 93 points or less in six of those setbacks, including Wednesday’s 91-81 defeat in Cleveland.
It’s likely that Anthony will return Tuesday when the Knicks play the woeful Detroit Pistons. Davis also could make his debut that night.
Meanwhile, the Heat could get back Dwyane Wade on Friday night. Wade has missed Miami’s last six games with the ankle problem, and has sat out nine overall this season. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra says Wade has been able to do a number of on-court workouts in recent days, including one Friday morning.
